Day 01 (D): Melbourne to Adelaide

We depart from Melbourne and head directly for the Western Highway, which takes us past Ballarat, and into the flat, grain-growing regions of Western Victoria. We pass through Horsham and Nhill before crossing the border into South Australia. At Tailem Bend we cross the Murray River and then travel through the Mount Lofty Hills into Adelaide. As we descend into the city we will have some great views over the Adelaide Plains to the blue Gulf waters to the west. Dinner and accommodation is at the TBA and our base for the next 4 nights.

Day 02 (BLD): Adelaide

After breakfast, our local guide for a sightseeing tour of Adelaide meets us. First stop is where it all started – Montifore Hill from where Colonel Light planned a great city of the future in the sweeping valley below. Nearby is one of Adelaide most prominent landmarks – St Peters Cathedral, which overlooks the city from North Adelaide. We have arranged an inspection of the fascinating stain glass within the Cathedral. It ranges from Victorian to modern times and includes recent windows by South Australian Glass artist, Cedar Prest. In the Parklands, just below the Cathedral, is one of the most beautiful Cricket Ovals in the world? Our local guide will show us firsthand the facilities at Adelaide Oval – the modern Bradman Stand, the National Trust Listed Score Board well over 100 years old and the most recent addition of all, the retractable lights for night cricket and football. After our tour we rejoin the coach and travel to the suburb of West Lakes where we join the “West Lakes Princess” for a luncheon cruise. After lunch we visit the South Australian Maritime Museum, acclaimed as one of the best of its kind in the world, and it’s not hard to see why! In the Bond Stores, the museum’s main gallery, you can go aboard a full-scale copy of a sailing ketch and in the basement see for yourself the conditions under which the early settlers sailed out from Europe. From Port Adelaide we return to the motel for dinner.

Day 03 (BD): The Adelaide Hills & Hahndorf

This morning we have planned a leisurely start to the day. Take a walk in the parklands opposite or just relax and enjoy the facilities of the hotel. Mid morning we will head up into the Adelaide Hills to the Mount Lofty Summit for some stunning views over the city and the Gulf St Vincent. Next stop is nearby Hahndorf – Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement and a superb “flashback” to the nineteenth century with its shops, eating houses and attractions housed in authentic surroundings. Hans Heysen, world-renowned artist, settled in Hahndorf in 1908 and built his studio, “The Cedars” in the style of a Bavarian Chalet. We will enjoy a guided tour of the house, the studio (which has been kept just the way Hans Heysen left it, including some unfinished sketches) and the extensive gardens. This was his base as he painted extensively on site in the hills around Hahndorf and in the Flinders Ranges. After the tour we will park in the main street where there is a variety of stalls and shops with a European Market place atmosphere. Art and craft shops are plentiful and display and sell works of gifted local artists. After lunch (own expense) and plenty of time to explore the town we return to our hotel.

Day 04 (BLD): Victor Harbour & the South Coast

The Fleurieu Peninsula to the south of Adelaide has some spectacular scenery. French explorer Nicholas Baudin named it in 1802 after Napoleon’s navy Minister. The “unofficial” capital of the Fleurieu Peninsula is Victor Harbour, a seaside resort overlooking Encounter Bay. Nearby is the historical river port of Goolwa near where the Murray River enters the Southern Ocean.
After a hearty breakfast we travel to Victor Harbour. We are joined by our local guide for a brief sightseeing tour, followed by morning tea, before taking the scenic coastal road through Port Elliot to the historical township of Goolwa (an aboriginal word meaning ”elbow”). Situated on the bend in the Murray, near the mouth of the river, Goolwa initially grew with the developing trade along the Mighty Murray. The Murray mouth silted up and large ships were unable to get up to Goolwa, so a railway line, the first in the state, was built from Goolwa to nearby Port Elliot. In the 1880’s a new railway line to Adelaide spelt the end for Goolwa as a Port Town! We head to the Goolwa Wharf where we board the MV Aroona for a river cruise. The cruise takes us through the Goolwa Barrage, one of 5 constructed in the 1930s to separate the seawater from the fresh water of the river. From here the river mouth and the entrance to the Coorong are 4kms further on and, depending on the tide, can be freely accessed. Lunch is served on board and the ship’s Captain gives a full commentary on the history of this very interesting area, including the making of the film “Storm Boy”. On our return to the Port of Goolwa we will visit the Signal Point Visitor Information Centre, which was opened in 1988 by Prince Charles and Lady Diana. The centre is an interpretative display on the River Murray & Darling Basin System providing history, paddle steamer information, aboriginal culture, and environmental issues. You may wish to visit the Café, which overlooks the Murray and its Riverboats and souvenirs are also available. Our day complete, we return to Adelaide and our final night on tour.
